Mark Murphy, Department for Work and Pensions trainee, wins CETC's John Sandbach Prize
A student on the very first cohort of the Department for Work and Pensions in-house course, designed and delivered by CETC, has been awarded the John Sandbach Memorial prize.
Mark Murphy, a Finance Management trainee at DWP was awarded the prize on Friday 11th May at a lunch organised by CETC. The lunch was attended by the members of the CETC Governing Body, CETC staff, and CETC's other prize-winning students from the recently awarded CIPFA prizes for performance in the 2006 Final Test of Professional Competence level papers.
The John Sandbach prize is awarded each year by the CETC Governing Body to honour the CETC student who has achieved the highest marks across the Diploma level of the Professional Accountancy Qualification in the previous year. The performance of hundreds of students across all CETC locations: South East, Midlands, West of England, East Scotland, and Wales, as well as the in-house course for the DWP which is run in Leeds, are taken into account. Gary Gilbert, Head of CETC, explains more about the history of the award: "The prize is a tribute to John Sandbach, who was Director of Finance at Liverpool University, and who served as chairman of the CETC Governing Body; he sadly passed away in 2003. John was an active member of the Institute and served for many years on its Council; he is remembered fondly by fellow members and Institute staff for his contribution to CIPFA and the higher education sector as well as by CETC for his guiding role on the governing body."
Mark began studying with CETC in autumn 2005 when the DWP in-house began and sat the first Diploma level papers in December 2005 then sitting the remainder during 2006. The in-house programme has been deemed a massive success by all involved and currently there are around 40 students from several employers in the area in three groups attending courses in Leeds. Mark is now due to sit the Final Test of Professional Competence level papers in the June 2007 examinations. Commenting on winning the prize, he said: "I am delighted to win this prize which I think is a reflection on the high quality of teaching at CETC."
Speaking at the lunch, David Poynton, Chair of the CETC Governing Body, congratulated all the prizewinners present on winning the awards and attributed this to their hard work and dedication. He then awarded Mark with the commemorative Quaich bowl and a cheque on behalf of the CETC Governing Body and wished him luck with the forthcoming exams.
